Microsoft Edge has newly added the security feature in its browser where an HTTPS secure connection will be automatically established from HTTP post enabling Automatic HTTPS.

What is HTTPS over HTTP?

HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure is an extension of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It is used for secure communication over a computer network and is widely used on the Internet. In HTTPS, the communication protocol is encrypted using Transport Layer Security or, formerly, Secure Sockets Layer.

The newest Microsoft Edge security feature:

The new Microsoft Edge feature is in the preview of the Canary and Developer channels.

It has been reported that the updated Microsoft Edge will be deployed to selective Microsoft Edge 92 users.

The additional feature of Edge comes after the software giant supplemented the feature security URL in Microsoft 365 roadmap.

“Automatic HTTPS switches your connections to websites from HTTP to HTTPS on sites that are highly likely to support the more secure protocol,” provides Microsoft.

How does HTTPS help in security:

To detail the advantages of the extended version of the HTTP protocol, it is to be noted that providing secure communication over a computer network.

As opposed to HTTPS, the data sent over HTTP can be mal utilized by malicious programs operating a vulnerable system.

HTTPS can also protect web users against MITM i.e. man-in-the-middle attacks over unencrypted HTTP links.

Apart from Microsoft, several browser vendors have implemented the additional security feature to enable  HTTPS on all websites automatically.

Leading browser vendors Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox automatically default the HTTP addresses to the secure HTTPS version.
