Samsung, a South Korean conglomerate, announced on Friday that it had experienced a cybersecurity incident. in Samsung Data Breach, It resulted in unauthorized access to some customer information, the second such incident this year.
“In late July 2022, an unauthorized third party obtained information from some of Samsung’s US systems,” the company said in a statement. We discovered that certain customers’ personal information was compromised on August 4, 2022, as a result of our ongoing investigation.
According to Samsung, the infiltration allowed hackers to access data. The data such as names, contact and demographic information, dates of birth, and product registration information.
It emphasized that the incident did not affect users’ Social Security numbers or credit or debit card numbers. But it did note that the information leaked for each relevant customer may differ.
The information gathered is required to assist the company in providing the best experience possible with its products and services. It’s unclear how many customers were affected, who was behind the hack, and why it took the company nearly a month to disclose the breach.
Apart from informing users about the security incident, Samsung stated that it has taken steps to secure the affected systems. Samsung also hired an outside cybersecurity firm to lead the response efforts.
Furthermore, it advises users to be on the lookout for potential social engineering attempts. Additionally, avoid clicking on links or opening attachments from unknown senders, and monitor their accounts for potentially suspicious activity.
The announcement comes less than six months after a similar incident was confirmed by Samsung. In March 2022, they revealed that internal data, including source code for its Galaxy smartphones, had been leaked as a result of an extortion attack staged by the LAPSUS$ gang.
